AI Search & Zero-Click Statistics 2026: Clicks Are Falling

AI search and zero-click statistics 2026 chart showing the share of Google searches ending without a click rising to 68%

Last updated: · Every figure is linked to its original source · Compiled by the Netotraffic research team

Search is changing faster than at any time in the last 20 years. Google answers more questions directly with AI Overviews and AI Mode, hundreds of millions of people ask ChatGPT and Gemini instead of searching, and fewer searches end with a click to a website. This page gathers the latest verified statistics on AI search, zero-click searches and what they mean for website traffic, with a link to the original source for every number.

  • 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024.[1]
  • AI Overviews appeared on 48% of tracked queries in early 2026, up from about 30% a year earlier.[5]
  • When an AI Overview appears, the #1 organic result’s click-through rate falls from 20.02% to 9.69%.[2]
  • Google’s AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in about a year; the Gemini app has 950 million.[10][11]
  • ChatGPT reached 800 million weekly users in October 2025.[13]
  • Google organic traffic to over 2,500 news sites fell 33% globally in one year.[17]
  • Only 4% of people say they always or often click through from AI answers to the news sources behind them.[16]

What percentage of Google searches end without a click?

In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of Google searches ended without a click, up from 60.45% in 2024, according to SparkToro’s clickstream analysis. About ten years ago the figure was around 45%.[1]

Netotraffic analysis: at 68.01% zero-click, only about 32 of every 100 Google searches send a visit to any website. In 2024 it was about 40, so the share of searches that send a click fell by about a fifth in two years ((40 − 32) ÷ 40 = 20%).
  • When an AI Overview appears, 74.3% of searches end without an organic click, against 53.6% without one (Advanced Web Ranking, July 2026).[2]
  • In a Bain & Company consumer survey, about 60% of searches ended without the user going to another site, and about 80% of search users rely on AI summaries at least 40% of the time.[3]
  • Bain estimates this reduces organic web traffic by 15% to 25%.[3]

How often do Google AI Overviews appear?

It depends on the keyword set, but the trend is up. BrightEdge found AI Overviews on 48% of tracked queries in February 2026, up from about 30% a year earlier. Advanced Web Ranking saw them on 43% of US desktop results in July 2026.[5][2]

  • Longer questions trigger more AI answers: only 8% of one- or two-word searches showed an AI summary, against 53% of searches with 10+ words.[7]
  • AI Overviews now average more than 1,200 pixels tall, pushing organic results below the fold on a standard screen.[5]

How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

By about half or more. Advanced Web Ranking measured a 52% drop in the #1 result’s click-through rate when an AI Overview appears (20.02% → 9.69%), and Ahrefs measured a 58% drop.[2][8]

Netotraffic analysis: a #1 ranking that used to earn 1,000 clicks now earns about 484 when an AI Overview sits above it (1,000 × 9.69 ÷ 20.02).

  • Pew found that users who saw an AI summary clicked a regular result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1%.[7]
  • Even queries without AI Overviews lost 41% of their organic click-through rate, a sign that clicks are falling across search, not just on AI results.[9]

How many people use AI search tools?

Hundreds of millions to billions. Google’s AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. ChatGPT has 800 million weekly users and the Gemini app 950 million monthly users.[10][11][13]

  • The Gemini app grew from 400 million to over 900 million monthly users in one year.[10]
  • ChatGPT grew from 500 million weekly users at the end of March 2025 to 800 million in October 2025.[13]
  • Google still handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, and says AI Overviews increase usage by over 10% for the types of queries that show them.[12]
  • Google says it sends “billions of clicks to websites every week” through AI features in Search.[11]
  • 44% of US adults say they use ChatGPT, including 61% of adults aged 18–29 (2026 survey).[15]
  • Weekly use of AI chatbots for news rose from 7% to 10% globally in a year.[16]
Netotraffic analysis: AI search is not replacing Google; it is happening inside Google. AI Overviews reach 2.5 billion people a month, about 3× ChatGPT’s weekly audience (different measures, so this is a rough comparison). Most “AI search” exposure happens on a Google results page, often without a click.

How much website traffic comes from AI chatbots?

Still very little. AI referrals were 1.08% of website traffic across 13,770 brand domains, and 87.4% of that came from ChatGPT, according to Conductor.[6] SparkToro estimates AI tools send less than 1% of all traffic out to the web.[1]

  • ChatGPT’s share of worldwide referral traffic reached an all-time high of 0.32% in May 2026, up from 0.23% in April.[18]
  • For the median website, AI sends just 0.14% of traffic, though AI traffic grew 66% in 2025.[19]
  • AI-referred traffic grew 632% year over year, and its conversion rate rose 55% to 1.3%.[20]
  • Visitors from AI assistants are engaged: their median GA4 engagement rate is 60.3%, close to organic search (63.4%).[21]
  • Only 0.34% of Google searches went on to AI Mode from January to April 2026.[1]

How is AI search affecting publishers’ traffic?

Hard. Google organic search traffic to over 2,500 news and media sites fell 33% globally and 38% in the US between November 2024 and November 2025, according to Chartbeat data in the Reuters Institute’s 2026 trends report.[17]

  • Publishers expect search traffic to decline by more than 40% over the next three years.[17]
  • Across 27 markets, only 4% of respondents say they always or often click through from AI chatbots to the underlying news sources.[16]
  • AI chatbots drove about 96% less referral traffic than traditional Google search in Q4 2024.[22]
  • Organic search traffic declined in 13 of 17 industries in 2025, including healthcare (−30.09%), banking (−27.09%) and education (−26.88%).[19]

How do websites get cited in AI answers?

Ranking #1 is no longer enough. Only about 17% of sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google’s organic top 10.[5] Being cited pays: cited brands get 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks.[9]

  • The vast majority of AI summaries (88%) cite three or more sources.[7]
Netotraffic analysis: if only 17% of AI Overview citations come from the top 10, about 83% come from pages outside it. Clear, well-sourced pages with specific numbers, such as statistics pages, can be cited even without a top ranking.

What should website owners do about zero-click search?

Don’t depend on one channel. Make your pages easy for AI to cite, measure AI referrals separately, and build traffic sources you control.

  • Diversify traffic: email, social, partnerships and paid or native traffic reduce your dependence on organic clicks.
  • Write citable content: question headings, direct answers and sourced numbers.
  • Track AI referrals in GA4 (chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai) as their own channel group.
  • Watch click-through rate, not just rankings, in Google Search Console, since rankings can hold while clicks fall.
  • Convert the visitors you get: fewer clicks means each visit matters more.

Methodology and sources

We compiled statistics from search-analytics studies, company announcements, earnings remarks, surveys and news-industry research, and checked every figure against its original source page on October 7, 2026. Studies of AI Overviews use different keyword sets, devices and dates, so their prevalence and click-through numbers differ; we show them side by side. User counts are each company’s own figures and use different measures (weekly vs monthly). Calculations marked “Netotraffic analysis” are our own and show the formula used.
