How to Use URL Shorteners to Track your traffic

url shortners

On a Netotraffic banner / website-ads campaign, a URL shortener is optional extra click tracking — not SEO, and not a replacement for the stats panel. The only shorteners we accept on that product are cutt.ly and bitly. If you need sessions in Google Analytics 4, do not shorten a banner URL and hope. Order native ads and put a UTM on the real page URL instead.

Goo.gl is gone. TinyURL, Short.io, and random “SEO shortener” tools are not allowed on our banner orders. The panel still counts unique IPs delivered to whatever URL you put on the form.

When a shortener helps (and when it does not)

Banner placements often strip or hide the HTTP referrer. GA4 then shows Direct, (none), or almost nothing even while the campaign is filling. A cutt.ly or bitly link on the order URL gives you a click count and geo in that tool’s dashboard. That is useful extra data. It is not proof we failed if GA4 is empty — the stats panel is proof of delivery.

A shortener does not:

Most banner campaigns should use the real site URL and the panel. Add a shortener only if you want a second click log.

What we allow on the order

ToolOn a Netotraffic banner order?Use it for
Cutt.lyYesExtra clicks, geo, referrers. Public stats often at yourlink-stats
BitlyYesSame job if you already live in Bitly
Real URL + UTM (no shortener)Yes — preferred for native ads; fine for banners tooGA4 on native ads; panel on everything
Goo.glNo — shutdown
TinyURL, Short.io, T.ly, random shortenersNoDo not paste these as the Website field

If you paste a shortener we do not support, tracking and delivery checks get messy. Stick to the two names above or use the plain URL.

How to set it before checkout

  1. Finish the landing page. It must load. No malware. Banner campaigns: no load/exit popup or autoplay sound.
  2. If you also want a UTM (optional on banners, required thinking for native ads), add it to the real URL first:
    https://yoursite.com/offer/?utm_source=netotraffic&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=us-test
  3. Shorten that full URL in cutt.ly or bitly — not the bare domain, and not after a second redirect that strips the query string.
  4. Paste the shortened link into the Netotraffic Website field when you order. Do this at checkout. We cannot attach a shortener after the campaign is already running on a different URL without a URL change (re-check, possible delay).
  5. Open the stats panel when traffic starts. Use delivered / remaining there. Use cutt.ly or bitly as a second click chart if you want it.

Do not chain two shorteners. Do not put the shortener only in ads you control and a different URL on our form. The form URL is what we send.

Using Cutt.ly

Cutt.ly is the shortener most Netotraffic banner orders use. The product UI changes; the sequence does not.

  1. Create an account at cutt.ly (a tiny free allowance without an account exists; those stats are public. An account keeps the log in your dashboard).
  2. Paste the long URL (with UTM if you added one) into “Paste a link to shorten it” and shorten it.
  3. Optional: Settings → custom alias so the link is readable. Do not stuff keywords as if it were an SEO slug.
  4. Copy the short link into the Netotraffic order.
  5. After clicks start, open that link’s stats in Cutt.ly (clicks, countries, referrers). Many cutt.ly links also expose a public stats page by appending -stats to the short URL.

Bitly is the same idea: shorten the already-tagged URL, paste that short link on the order, read Bitly’s click report plus our panel.

We do not need you to install a Cutt.ly WordPress plugin that auto-shortens every permalink on the site. That is unrelated to this campaign URL.

Native ads: UTM, not a shortener

If the point of the order is a row in GA4, buy native ads (Google Analytics traffic). Tag the real URL before checkout:

https://yoursite.com/offer/?utm_source=netotraffic&utm_medium=native&utm_campaign=us-health-test

Always use utm_source=netotraffic so Acquisition is easy to filter. If you still shorten, shorten after the UTM is on the URL — never strip the query string. Most native-ads orders should skip the shortener entirely.

Filter GA4 to that source and compare the same dates to the panel. Numbers will not match 1:1. Walkthrough: how to see visits in GA4 and panel vs GA4.

Common questions

Do URL shorteners help SEO?

Not in any way this post used to imply. Google ranks the destination page. A short link is a redirect. Do not pick a shortener to “rank.”

Can I use TinyURL or Short.io on my Netotraffic order?

No. Banner extra tracking is cutt.ly or bitly only.

I shortened the URL after the campaign started. Why don’t the clicks match?

We send traffic to the Website field from checkout (or the last approved URL change). A shortener you created later is a different address unless you changed the order URL and we re-checked it.

GA4 is empty but Cutt.ly shows clicks. Did the campaign work?

On banners, that pattern is common. Trust the panel for delivery. Cutt.ly is extra. Empty GA4 on a banner order is not automatic proof of zero traffic. Empty GA4 on a native-ads order with a UTM is a tag/URL problem — pause and fix.

Should I put keywords in the short slug?

Only if you want a readable link. It does not rank the page. Don’t stuff.
